Why HR Blox

South Africa is the new hub. Your overseas HR platform wasn't built for it.

More global organisations are building teams in South Africa.

It makes sense. Strong English. A time zone that works with Europe. Skilled people who want to build a career.

Industry research expects the offshoring sector here to grow to around $6.8 billion by 2030, with more than 200,000 skilled jobs. (Robert Walters, 2025)

But there's a part of that story that doesn't get talked about enough.

What do you manage those people on?

The default is to drag the platform across

Most of the time, a global business does the obvious thing.

It takes the people platform it already uses in London, or Austin, or Amsterdam, and switches on a South African team.

It looks tidy. One system. One set of reports.

Until someone asks a simple question.

"How much sick leave does she have left?"

And the answer depends on a rule the platform was never built to know.

South Africa has its own rules

Not a few settings to tweak. Its own rules.

Sick leave runs on a 36-month cycle, not a calendar year.

Annual leave follows the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, not a company handbook written for another country.

Family responsibility leave, maternity leave and public holidays all work differently here. When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday becomes a holiday too.

There is no "at will". A dismissal has to follow a fair process, and if it doesn't, the CCMA is waiting.

There are employment equity and skills development obligations to report on. There is POPIA to protect people's information.

None of that shows up on a screen built for somewhere else.

Then HR abroad has to navigate it

Here's what I've seen, and what I think many businesses are quietly living with.

The HR team is in the UK, or the US.

The managers are in South Africa.

The HR person is asked about a warning, or a retrenchment, or a leave balance, and has to work out South African law from a distance.

So they guess. Or they ask a consultant. Or they wait.

And the manager on the ground, who has a real person in front of them and a real problem, gets an answer that is slow, or wrong, or both.

That isn't anyone's fault. It's what happens when the tool wasn't built for the place.

Risk hides in the gaps

A leave balance calculated the wrong way.

A warning issued without the right steps.

A report that was due and nobody knew.

A record that can't be found on the day it's needed.

One mistake is a headache. A pattern of them is a dispute, a claim, or a regulator asking questions.

What good looks like

A system that knows where your people actually work.

Where the South African rules are built in from the start, not bolted on afterwards.

Where every company in your group follows the rules of its own country.

And where the manager in Cape Town or Johannesburg, and the HR person in London, can see the same thing and trust it.

That's why HR Blox was built here, in South Africa, with South African rules as the starting point. And because every company in your group can have its own country, its own leave rules, its own holiday calendar and its own templates, the same system can be set up for your teams in other countries too.

If you're building in South Africa

Build with a system that knows where it is.

Because the people you're hiring here deserve to be managed properly. And the people managing them deserve a tool that helps, not one that guesses.
